Three bound volumes containing the manuscripts, in the hand of Henry Reed, of a series of 16 public lectures he gave on English poetry at the University of Pennsylvania, in College Hall, in 1841, beginning on 18 January and lasting until late April or early May (lecture 12 is dated April 5, 1841; vol. 3). Bound in at the beginning of vol. 1 is a printed flier, dated Philadelphia, December 1840, advertising the lectures under the title: Lectures on English poetry. The lectures were published in their entirety after Reed's death, under the editorship of his brother William B. Reed, in: Lectures on the British Poets (Philadelphia: Parry & McMillan, 1857; 2 vols.). The manuscript contains emendations in both ink and pencil, including insertions in the hand of Henry Reed; some minor emendations might reflect the editing of William Reed for the publication. In one instance, a note that contains a quotation about Chaucer from John Russell dated 1856 appears to be in the hand of William Reed (title page of the lecture on Chaucer, vol. 1), although it does not appear in the publication.
